Exercise for the Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a common problem that we see oftentimes in women over age 45. While we don’t always know the cause, two frequent reasons are rotator cuff surgery or any injury or surgery near the shoulder girdle. During healing, the shoulder can become stiff (i.e., frozen) because the arm is often held in a stationary position. In order to prevent frozen shoulder, it is necessary to keep the shoulder moving. A pulley device works well. If you have a frozen shoulder, stretching techniques can also help. Start with simple stretches held for short periods of time. Those who have frozen shoulder should learn the most effective stretches and stretching techniques so that they are able to perform these stretches on their own. It will take a long time to see results if stretches are only performed 2 to 3 times per week. This is why I recommend stretching several times a day to achieve the best result. Always progress slowly and listen to your body.
